S355 Structural Steel: Yield Strength and Properties
S355 Structural Steel has a specified minimum yield strength of 355 megapascals. The numbers below are the ones design and site work reach for.
Minimum yield strength: 355 MPa
| Minimum yield strength | 355 MPa |
| Minimum tensile strength | 470 to 630 MPa |
| Elongation | at least 22 percent |
| Density | 7,850 kg per cubic meter |
| Elastic modulus | 200 to 210 GPa |
| Typical use | the workhorse of modern structural steelwork |
Notes for design and site
S355 gives half again the strength of S235 for a few percent more cost, which settled the argument in most of the world. It welds well with ordinary consumables at normal thicknesses, though thicker sections deserve attention to preheat and toughness subgrades, JR through K2, chosen against service temperature.
