S235 Structural Steel: Yield Strength and Properties
S235 Structural Steel has a specified minimum yield strength of 235 megapascals. The numbers below are the ones design and site work reach for.
Minimum yield strength: 235 MPa
| Minimum yield strength | 235 MPa |
| Minimum tensile strength | 360 to 510 MPa |
| Elongation | at least 26 percent |
| Density | 7,850 kg per cubic meter |
| Elastic modulus | 200 to 210 GPa |
| Typical use | light framing, secondary members, general fabrication |
Notes for design and site
S235 is the gentle end of structural steel: easy to weld, easy to bend, hard to break badly. Its low strength rarely governs sections sized for stiffness or buckling anyway, which is why purlins, handrails, and light frames stay S235 while primary members moved on. The number 235 applies up to 16 millimeter thickness and eases downward beyond.
