Notes for design and site
Column verticals, transfer elements and thick foundation mats are its home. At 0.79 in2 apiece the counts stay manageable in members that would drown in #5, and the inch even diameter makes it the bar everyone uses for mental checks of cover, spacing and hook sizes.
A 40 diameter rough lap is 40 inches, and at that length lapped column verticals start costing real steel and pour access, which is why mechanical couplers become common at #8 and above. A 20 ft bar is 53 pounds: two people or equipment.
