#5 Rebar
The US workhorse: footing mats, wall verticals and bridge deck steel default to #5 the way Canadian work defaults to 15M.
5/8 inch diameter, 0.31 in2, 1.043 lb per foot
| Nominal diameter | 5/8 in (15.9 mm) |
| Cross section area | 0.31 in2 (200 mm2) |
| Weight | 1.043 lb per foot (1.552 kg per meter) |
| Typical grade | Grade 60, 60 ksi yield |
| Soft metric name | No. 16 |
| 20 ft stock bar | about 20.9 lb |
| Canadian twin | 15M, the same 200 mm2 area |
Notes for design and site
Its 200 mm2 area is identical to the Canadian 15M, one of the few places the two systems land on the same number, so cross border details swap cleanly. In US practice it is the general purpose structural bar: enough area to matter, small enough to lap and hook without ceremony.
Rough lap at 40 diameters is 25 inches. Real development lengths move with concrete strength, cover and casting position, and top bars in deep members need roughly a third more, so run the check rather than scaling off a neighbouring detail.
