Notes for design and site
Everything routine ends at #11: it is the largest bar ACI generally allows to be lap spliced at all, with #14 and #18 requiring couplers, welds or special end conditions, and that boundary shapes how heavy columns and mats get detailed. Its 1.56 in2 comes from the 1 1/4 inch square bar it replaced.
The 40 diameter rough figure is about 56 inches, and a 20 ft bar weighs 106 pounds: nothing here is hand work. On drawings the metric name is No. 36, and in Canadian terms the closest bar is 35M at 1000 mm2.
