Net Present Value
Money later is worth less than money now, and net present value prices that fact into every engineering decision with a future.
The equation
NPV = Σ CFt / (1 + r)^t
- CFt is the cash flow in period t, negative for costs
- r is the discount rate per period
- A positive NPV clears the hurdle rate, zero defines the IRR
Worked example
Receiving 100 thousand at the end of each of three years, discounted at 8 percent, is worth 92.6 + 85.7 + 79.4 = 257.7 thousand today, not 300. Weigh that against an upfront cost and the investment decision writes itself.
When to use it
The discount rate carries all the argument: risk it too low and bad projects pass, too high and long lived assets like water schemes never get built. Compare options over the same horizon and in real or nominal terms consistently.
