Grid Method for Earthwork Volumes

Lay a grid over a site, measure cut or fill at each node, and earthwork volumes reduce to disciplined bookkeeping.

The equation

V = A × (mean of the four corner depths)
  • A is the plan area of each grid cell
  • Corner depths are cut or fill at the four nodes
  • Sum cell volumes, keeping cut and fill separate

Worked example

A 20 by 20 meter cell with corner cuts of 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7 meters averages 0.85, giving 400 × 0.85 = 340 cubic meters of cut. Repeat across the grid and the site balance falls out, before any bulking factors.

When to use it

Tighter grids capture rolling ground better, and cells crossing the cut fill line deserve splitting. Add bulking when hauling cut and shrinkage when compacting fill, or the muck balance will lie to you.
