Density of Cement Slurry
Neat oilwell cement mixes far heavier than any common mud, and managing that density difference is most of the art of primary cementing.
Neat Class G: 15.8 ppg
| Neat Class G slurry | 15.8 ppg, SG 1.9 |
| Extended, lightweight slurries | 11 to 13.5 ppg |
| Foamed cement | down to about 9 ppg |
| Densified slurries | up to about 18 ppg |
| Set cement density | similar to slurry, near 1.9 SG for neat |
Notes for design and site
A 15.8 ppg column standing above a formation that only tolerates 13 ppg equivalent will fracture it and vanish, which is why lightweight extenders, foamed designs, and carefully staged jobs exist. Displacement mechanics also live on this contrast: cement wants to slump downhill through lighter mud unless the job keeps interfaces moving.
