Type a value in either box and the other updates as you go. The pound used here is the international avoirdupois pound, defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so every figure below traces back to a single exact number rather than a rounded factor.

How to use this tool
Type into either box. Enter kilograms on the left and pounds appear on the right as you type, or work backwards and enter pounds to get kilograms. Nothing needs to be submitted and there is no calculate button, because the conversion is a single division and there is no reason to make you wait for it. The slider is there for when you want to sweep through a range and watch the pound figure move rather than test one value at a time.
The input people get wrong is the pounds and ounces box. Ounces here are decimal ounces out of sixteen, so 0.5 lb reads as 8 oz, not 5 oz. If a bathroom scale or a kitchen scale is showing you something like 12 lb 4 oz, that is 12.25 lb, and you would type 12.25 into the pounds box. The stones and pounds card follows the same rule at fourteen pounds to the stone.
Every row of the table and every chip above it is a real link. Clicking one loads that conversion into the tool and updates the address bar, so you can bookmark or send someone a link that opens straight on the number you were looking at. The decimal places control changes how the results are displayed but never how they are calculated, so raising it after the fact will always reveal more correct digits rather than different ones.
What the conversion is actually doing
To convert kg to lbs you divide by 0.45359237. That is the whole calculation. Every other figure on the page is a rearrangement of that one result: multiply the fractional part by sixteen for ounces, divide by fourteen for stones, multiply the kilograms by a thousand for grams.
What makes that number worth knowing is that it is not a measurement. The international avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, a figure agreed in 1959 by the national standards bodies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Before that agreement the American pound and the British pound differed very slightly, which is a genuinely awkward thing to discover halfway through a trade contract. Since 1959 the conversion from kg to pounds has been exact by definition, so it introduces no error at all. Any error you see in a converted figure came from your input or from rounding the output, never from the factor.
The reciprocal is the one people memorise. One kilogram is 2.204622621848776 pounds, usually shortened to 2.2046 or, far too often, to 2.2. That shortcut is convenient and it is also the single largest source of wrong answers in this whole area, which is why the diagram above spends its space on it rather than on anything prettier.
Why the pound is defined from the kilogram and not the reverse
It looks backwards at first. The pound is older, so you would expect the newer unit to be defined in terms of it. The reason it runs the other way is that only one of the two units has a physical definition you can chase down to first principles. The kilogram is an SI base unit, fixed since 2019 by assigning an exact value to the Planck constant, which means any properly equipped laboratory can realise a kilogram from physics alone. The pound has no such definition and never has. It exists today purely as a stated multiple of the kilogram.
There is a second distinction hiding underneath, and it is the one that trips up engineers rather than shoppers. The kilogram measures mass, the amount of matter present. The pound is used in everyday speech for weight, which is a force, and force depends on gravity. Your mass does not change on the Moon but your weight falls to about a sixth. In practice this rarely bites, because bathroom scales and kitchen scales are calibrated for Earth surface gravity and quietly hand you a mass reading. It bites hard in engineering, where the pound splits into two units with the same name: the pound mass and the pound force. If you are sizing anything structural, check which one your source means before you convert it, because the numbers are numerically equal at sea level and wildly different in an equation.
A worked check you can repeat on paper
Load the tool with its default of 70 kg and follow along. This is a conversion you can do with a pocket calculator, and being able to reproduce it is the fastest way to satisfy yourself that a converter is not quietly rounding somewhere it should not.
Start with the division. 70 divided by 0.45359237 gives 154.323583529 lb. Keep the digits for now and round at the very end, never in the middle.
Split off the whole pounds. That leaves 154 lb with 0.323583529 lb left over. Multiply the remainder by sixteen to turn it into ounces: 0.323583529 times 16 is 5.177336 oz. So 70 kg is 154 lb 5.177 oz.
For stones, divide the total pounds by fourteen. 154.323583529 divided by 14 is 11.023113 stone, so 11 whole stone, and 11 stone is exactly 154 lb, leaving the same 0.32 lb remainder. 70 kg is 11 st 0.32 lb.
Now do it the long way as a check. Convert to grams first: 70 kg is 70000 g. One ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g, so 70000 divided by 28.349523125 is 2469.177336 oz. Divide by sixteen and you get 154.323583529 lb, digit for digit the same answer arrived at through a completely different route. Two independent paths landing on the same figure is worth more than either one on its own.
Finally, try the shortcut so you can see what it costs. 70 times 2.2 is 154.0 lb even. The exact answer is 154.32 lb. The shortcut has thrown away 0.32 lb, which is 5.2 oz, on a single person's body weight.

Mistakes that catch people out
Using 2.2 instead of 2.2046. It is short by about one part in 470. On 80 kg that is 5.9 oz, on 100 kg it is 7.4 oz, and on a tonne it is a little over 4.6 lb. Fine for guessing whether a bag will pass, useless anywhere a figure gets recorded.
Reading the ounces as a decimal. A result of 154.32 lb is not 154 lb 32 oz, and it is not 154 lb 3.2 oz either. The 0.32 is a fraction of a pound, so it becomes 0.32 times 16, which is 5.18 oz. Sixteen is the only number that belongs in that step.
Assuming 23 kg and 50 lb are the same limit. They are the two common airline allowances and they are not equal. 50 lb is 22.68 kg, so the metric allowance is the more generous of the two by 0.32 kg. Pack to the 50 lb figure and you will pass either desk.
Mixing up the tons. A tonne is 1000 kg, a US short ton is 2000 lb which is 907.18 kg, and a UK long ton is 2240 lb which is 1016.05 kg. Three units, one word, roughly a ten percent spread between the extremes. If a document just says ton, find out which one before converting anything.
Rounding partway through. Converting 65 kg to 143.3 lb and then splitting that into ounces gives 143 lb 4.80 oz. Carrying the full 143.30047 lb gives 143 lb 4.81 oz. The gap is trivial here and it compounds badly across a long parts list, so round once, at the end.
Trusting a published table to its last digit. Conversion tables get copied between sites for years without anyone rechecking them, and small errors survive that process intact. There is a widely reproduced kilograms to pounds table that gives 4 kg as 8 lb 13.100 oz when the correct figure is 8 lb 13.096 oz, and 9 kg as 19 lb 13.470 oz when it should be 19 lb 13.466 oz. Both look like four significant figure results padded out to three decimals. Neither is a different conversion factor, but if you are checking your own work against a table like that, you will waste an afternoon.
How this was checked
The engine was written twice. The first version divides kilograms by 0.45359237 directly. The second goes the long way round, converting to grams, then to ounces at 28.349523125 g per ounce, then to pounds. Across the test values the two routes agree to the last digit a double precision float can hold, which is what you would expect given both derive from the same exact definition, and which would immediately expose a mistyped constant in either one.
Both were then checked against a published conversion table row by row. Nineteen of the twenty two rows matched exactly. The three that did not are the ones described above, and they were resolved with exact integer arithmetic rather than floating point: treating the pound as the exact fraction 45359237 over 100000000 and computing 4 kg to twelve decimal places gives 141.095847798321 total ounces, which is 8 lb and 13.0958 oz. The table's 13.100 is a rounding artefact. The tool reports 13.096.
Round tripping was checked separately. Converting a value to pounds and straight back to kilograms returns the original number for every test case, with the only deviations appearing at the fourteenth significant figure where floating point runs out of room. That is a property of the arithmetic, not of the conversion.
