Concrete Grade M50: Strength, Mix Ratio, and Uses
M50 concrete reaches a characteristic cube strength of 50 newtons per square millimeter at 28 days. Here is what goes into it and where it belongs.
Characteristic strength: 50 N/mm² cube at 28 days
| Grade designation | M50 |
| Characteristic cube strength | 50 N/mm² |
| Approximate cylinder strength | 40 N/mm² |
| Mix | design mix only |
| Typical cement content | commonly 400 to 480 kg per cubic meter with supplementary cementitious materials |
| Typical uses | high rise columns, long span prestressed work, special structures |
Notes for design and site
M50 and beyond is high performance territory: silica fume or fly ash, aggressive admixture dosing, and aggregates chosen for stiffness. Columns shrink in cross section, which is usually the point. Quality control becomes the design: a missed water dose matters far more at M50 than at M20.
